Our House

Blogs of the work that I am doing on our house in Hillsborough. This is the first time that I am redoing a house. I have done bit's and pieces on my parents house, but this time I am mostly on my own. My Fiance Barbra is helping out alot, and my family has come down for some help as well.

I tested the old whole house humidifier and found that the valve leaked. so I turned it off. I also realized that the old humidifier was missing the element on the inside, so it needed replacing. I came back the next morning to find the leaky valve leaked all over the basement so I went out and bought this new humidifier. It was a relative easy install, and now has humidity control. We keep the house at about 40% humidity. It took around 1 day to stabilize, but now it's nice and comfortable.

With my Tile Cutting Station set up, I finally finished most of the tile countertop this weekend. I say most because I was short on the edge pieces by 3. I am ordering them so that I can complete. It really looks great though. I still need to cut the back splash pieces and install them, but it's almost a usable counter top. I still need to apply grout, but I want to wait and do it all at once. The other problem that we had is that the sink does not come with long enough mounting screws, so I found some and ordered them off the web. Lowes and HD do not carry them. They only have the standard length that is included with the sink. Maybe they should realize they need to carry the longer screws that are not included. I also installed the space on 1 side of the sink base cabinet. The other side I still need to make. It is an odd shape so I will try that next.

I finally took the time to update the workshop area. This way I can keep the tools organized, and start getting our 2nd bedroom back into shape to be a bedroom. I am still going to install a third peg board where the shelfs are so that I can get all the tools op on the rack. I will probably install a third light over there as well. The other thing I need to do is install a light by the washer and dryer now that I moved them over, and will remove part of the platform they are on. Eventually I will remove the platform completely.

Well, As you can see the Floor has been patched. It is nice because now our little roomba will not get stuck in the hole :-) Now I just need to get the floor refinished, and it will be all done :-)
It looks much better with just that hole patched. Can't wait to see the floor refinished. (We finally found the White Oak at the Home Depot, on the 4th try )

SO finally our corner cabinet has showed up. so now all of the cabinets are in place. I just need to make 2 fillers to fill the left and the right of the sink in. I also need to put the door of the corner cabinet on the other side, I told them the wrong one broke... Oops. I finished the tiling on the left of the stove, so now that only needs grouting, and I need to finish the rest of the tile. I will start that after Christmas. In the living room, I have removed all the carpet, and started putting down the base molding. It is starting to look like a room again :-)

Well, I finally put in the grout for the floor. It turned out a bit lighter then I wanted, but it looks nice. Also my hand got a huge blister, so I figured I'd share :-) The floor looks so much nicer that it is now grouted. We get the last cabinet on Thursday, so I can start laying the tile for the counter top :-)

The good news is that we now have running water again in the kitchen though we are still waiting for the replacement to the damaged cabinet that we need. I hope that it will show up soon as I would like to get the counter top installed. The other thing that I got done is most of the end tiles that will make the transition into the living room with the hard wood. It should look good when done. Though I ran out of floor thinset, so I need to buy more... again.

Well, I got the hole made for the sink, but it's a little more difficult then I planned. The sink filled up the space almost completely. I had to cut away part of the front of the cabinet to get it to fit. I think that once I get the backer in and the tile installed it will all work out nice. I just need to figure out how to mount the front of the sink because it is really tight. I think that it will look good once done though. I need to get a different faucet. It just won't work with the window right there and it doesn't fit right on the sink. I think that I need a lighter one as well, but it is coming out nicely.

I finished the front porch this weekend so we can keep our insurance. I think that it looks great, but I didn't want to do it this early, but now it's out of the way and just needs to be painted.

This weekend we got to hang most of the cabinets. I say most because the right hand corner one was damaged. We are waiting for that to come in. Hopefully it will not take too long. I'd like to start working on the counter top. The first picture is the tile granite countertop that we are going to use. It is from www.bedrockcreations.net They are a great company that has pre made granite tile countertop parts. I will be putting down the small section to see how it goes next weekend, as well as grouting the floor.

Well, It's been a while, but I'm back from Japan and working again. Finally our Kitchen Cabinets Showed up. We tore out the old cabinets and are starting to install the new ones. These are just sitting in place now, but they look good. I also got noticed that we neded to have a railing on our front porch, so I started that project yesterday. I went with a wood setup, and I think that it will look good when completed. I plan on painting it white in the spring.
